Baby Sand Hill Crane

Here is a better picture of the baby Sand Hill Crane. Unfortunately, the 2nd egg did not hatch, or the baby died, but anyway, the proud parents have one very cute little chick! Today they are feeding and the chick is following them around.
Yes, they are very close to a busy highway and you can also see the edge of a street that comes off the highway! These birds stand about 4 feet tall and the male is the upright one in the photo. He is fearless, and don't dare get too close to them. He would protect the little one! When and if they decide to cross the highway, they will and traffic will stop to let them cross. I have stopped a few times for crossing birds! Click on the photos for a better look at the chick.

  1. I am enjoying this bit of a saga. Wildlife does have challenges doesn't it. Great photos of the cranes. Keep the story going. By summer's end the little guy should be ready to fly.
