Spreading Red Mulch

Hi from Ten Gables Cottage,
Today it is supposed to reach 85 degrees, so I decided to spread some of the red mulch in the rose garden early before the heat set in. I call it The Rose Garden even though it is really a space between the driveway and the house and is landscaped with other plants as well. Anyway, you can see how great the red mulch looks with the brick around the outside of the house as well as with the brick pavers on the porches.

Another peek of the mulch, but check out the beautiful Allamanda which is blooming profusely.

Now, here is a question for you. What in the world am I going to do with this old stove. It is in a corner of the porch, just for decoration, and the paint is really chipping (Shabby Chic). However, even though Shabby Chic is stylish, I feel it needs to be scrapped of old paint and re-painted to preserve it from rust, even though some people love rust. So I am thinking of painting it again and then opening the door and putting a pot of trailing flowers inside, as well as a pot in the back of it and sort of repurposeing it into a planter. What do you think? Any ideas? Help me be creative!! Your comments are welcome!

  1. Isn't it a nice feeling when you have spread new mulch? :) Ten Gables Cottage...what a lovely name...I have always wanted to name our home, but could never come up with the right name.

Your stove would make a GREAT planter! What about adding your flowers first and seeing if that makes a difference before you paint it? You could easily take the pots out if you feel it still needs color.

  2. Thanks Hanni, what a great idea. It is very heavy and I hate having to move it into the yard to paint it, so your idea sounds so good. I think you are right...I would like it if it just had color and interest. So glad you commented..watch for its transformation with plants!

  3. The red mulch is very striking! I like the idea of making the stove into a planter. Not sure what plants but a variegated ivy along with something else might be nice?

  4. I would sand a few areas and dab some colored paint here and there and by all means plant it up! Spiky and trailing...

  5. Teh variegated ivy sounds nice, Kelli, maybe in with some Spiky colored flowers as suggested by Darla. The colored paint dabbed on sounds interesting, too, Darla. It gets early morning sun, but soon is shady, so does anyone have plant suggestions?
