The tree is all lit on the porch, but look what lurks in the garden!!
This is the "after" photo of what was once a beautiful plant ( see below) until it hit below freezing last night and stayed that way for several hours!
Remember my post of the tomato cage that you could barely see because of the big green and healthy tomato plant? Well, here is the poor thing now! I have no idea if the tomatoes will now fall off or will they rot or will they ripen? Only time will tell. By the way, it is now sunny and warm and tonight won't be that cold, so havoc can really occur in only a night!
What in the world? Is it some monster left over from Halloween? No! It is the banana tree! I'm almost scared of it, poor thing. It once had lovely deep green fronds standing so tall and proud.
Well, here is the Good! I have still got pea plants and ONE pea!! If all the blooms fell off and I only have this One pea, then perhaps I should have it gilded and display it on the sideboard!
I thought I would take heart and made some of my mother's famous peanut butter roll candy today since it is non-humid. However, it turned out a total mess as well. Some days one should just give up and read a book!
Hope your day went well, Egretta
Sounds like a tough day. Shame about the plants, they were so healthy looking before the frost. Hope you ate the peanut butter candy anyway or at least mixed it in some ice cream!
ReplyDeleteRe tomatoes: If it were my decision, I would pick the fruit and try to ripen them indoors. Even tomatoes picked very green normally do ripen this way.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, Mark. Maybe that is exactly what I should do. I could even fry them---have you ever had the Southern dish, Fried Green Tomatoes? Delicious!
ReplyDeleteNo, I've never had Fried Green Tomatoes, but it sounds nice. Perhaps it would go well with some Southern Fried Chicken?
ReplyDeleteMark, was that a "tongue in check" remark? I had to laugh! Indeed, Fried Green Tomatoes would go well with Southern Fried Chicken. Both are delicious! These two things are made differently, though. To fry the slices of green tomatoes, they are dipped in milk, then in cornmeal with a tiny bit of flour added, plenty of pepper and some salt and placed in hot cooking oil, frying quite rapidly until tender. Try them sometime and let me know what you think!
ReplyDeleteThanks Egretta. I shall pass the recipe to my chef...
